In terms of Gaelic football there has always been a strong rivalry along the Kildare/Laois border. However, two sports businesses, one from either side, have come together to help give children a quality introduction to the game.
Darren Strong Laois senior footballer and owner of DS Sports explains. “While supplying playing gear to clubs I have always been looking for ways to help more children get involved with and experience the game. Anything that helps and makes it easier for coaches and parents. I came up with the idea of a starter pack for kids. It consists of a gear bag, football gloves, gum shield and a Spot on football. I had seen the Spot on footballs earlier last year and contacted Barry to see if He would be interested in working together on this”
Barry Anderson owner of Kildare business Spot on Sports continues “When Darren contacted me I was happy to get involved. As a coach myself I have designed a new first touch football which helps introduce beginners to the skills of the game by using visual aids on the ball. It is a new concept and approach to how we introduce the game to beginners. I felt the starter pack was a natural fit for us. A study carried out last year in conjunction with UCC showed an increase in children’s confidence and perceived competence levels when using our footballs”
“It is something that kept cropping up in our research over the last couple of years that alot of parents bringing their child to their local club for the first time don’t know where to get simple things like gum shields or football gloves. I would encourage clubs to use these starter packs as It helps give children that quality introduction and takes a little bit of pressure off parents”
The starter pack is perfect for your club nursery or for any child starting their footballing journey this year. They are available for individuals to purchase for just €30 from Spotonsports.ie and dsSports.ie
